Loss of a Parent: Selling antique belongings

Sheridan style dining chairs

As I am in the process of selling items from various family members’ estates, I came across this very helpful website by Judith Miller. She writes this incredible guide with full color photos of every type of antique you could think of. If you register on her website for free, you can access estimates of price ranges on items in her catalog. Very helpful for local or ebay sales to give you somewhere to start if you have no idea.

Caregiver support: Selling inherited older ebay type items

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Do you find yourself wondering why your parents or grandparents bought something that you are now selling? I’m in the process of selling old items that were given to me or my mother that just don’t fit our lifestyle. Take “Sir John  Watson Gordon” for instance. He’s just a little too formal to say the least-I’m more of a jeans-type of gal-and I have to say he’s not the most happy man I could think of to hang on my wall.  A silly Bill Cosby print or something to make me laugh or smile would really be more appropriate.

I’m trying to figure out the best avenue to sell things- especially those over 50 lbs or the ones that are troublesome to ship to an ebay buyer. I’m looking into estate auctions, consignment stores and working with a friend to display them and show them in her warehouse showroom.

We’ll see what works best and I’ll report back. If you have a favorite way to sell your parent’s or grandparent’s older items I would love to hear about it! or even the funniest thing you sold! Please share.

How to Make the Most of Life During a Crisis Period

Life isn’t always smooth sailing. Sometimes we get fired or laid off from our jobs, must say goodbye to our partners, lose family members to illness or accident, or face financial troubles or other hardships. At these times, it’s all too easy to simply want to give up. Just stop trying and bury our heads under the covers, never to be seen again.

The fact is that life goes on, and that we will experience many ups and downs, joys and sorrows over the course of our time on planet Earth. Troubled times are here as a test of our personal constitution and a way to sharpen our survival skills. We experience the most growth during times of adversity or hardship. This is what gives us the strength and wisdom to keep going, to experience life to the fullest, to find beauty in the unexpected and to hold onto the hope that things will get better in time.

Some thoughts to keep in mind if you’re facing a rough patch: 1. Love and support sometimes comes when you least expect it. (more…)
